"We should have a name for our meetings," Edith started, her legs relaxed and straight out in front of her. She watched as she moved her toes one at a time.
“Like a secret society?” Bea questioned. She sat up and reached into the end table between her and Edith’s chairs, pulling open the top drawer. She withdrew a slim, silver case.
Popping it open, Ruby saw the cigars and reached out her hand for one. She withdrew her own lighter from her clutch, the one that was actually Jack’s. A pain enveloped her heart, reminding her of her husband’s absence. Ruby squeezed her eyes closed for the briefest of moments, and sighed deeply.
The other women started mentioning names, their eyes bright and cheeks reddened with excitement, but it all faded into the background. Ruby traced her fingers over the JKW initials engraved on Jack’s lighter. The pain of a spouse being gone to war was like her chest was being stabbed and yet no one saw the blood. The dagger-like pain was hidden and insidious, like silk over a coffin.
“The Silken Daggers,” Ruby blurted out.
Edith raised her glass, her eyes gleaming triumphantly. Bea and June followed suit. “To the Silken Daggers!”
Ruby repeated it, feeling the words roll around in her mouth. “The Silken Daggers,” she said quietly. Raising her glass, she added, “We have now officially formed and are holding our first meeting.”
The ladies touched glasses and threw back the remainder of the brandy. Ruby lifted the cigar to her lips, and turning the lighter around so she couldn’t see Jack’s initials, she lit it and inhaled deeply, smelling and feeling the tobacco go into her chest.
“What shall we do?” Bea asked as she sat back and closed her eyes, her head resting against the back of her chair.
“Solve crime. Who better to solve crimes than the women? We’re the least suspicious people. The men are at war, and someone needs to run this community,” Ruby stated.
“Well all right then.” Edith sat back, smiling…
“Don’t tell Paulie. He might let something slip to Jack in their written correspondence,” Ruby immediately blurted out. Paulie was one of Jack’s closest friends whom he frequently wrote. “Jack…” she said his name, feeling the ache return in her chest, “he has too much to worry about as it is. He has to focus on staying alive, for me and for our son.”
Edith looked at Ruby, her eyes full of bright affection for her friend. “Now, why would I tell the men? We’re the Silken Daggers.” A coy smile spread across Edith’s face.
Ruby was satisfied. “That’s my girl.” She felt better knowing Jack wouldn’t know quite yet about another dangerous adventure she had decided to go on, not while he had to focus on staying alive.
Jack and Ruby Walsh thought their sleepy town's Independence Day would be like all the others. That is, until an accidental explosion of fireworks destroys downtown Cherokee, Iowa. A witch-hunt ensues as WWII tensions rise, causing everyone to blame one immigrant German family for the fire. But was it really them? Only Jack and Ruby have the courage to fight for justice, even as they stand against the most corrupt in their community. Ignited by their white-hot passion for each other, the two stick together until they have Cherokee on its knees, rectifying its wrongs and uncovering a more sinister criminal network. RACE TO THE GALLOWS is a harrowing tale of love, loyalty, and courage. Based on true events in Northwest Iowa.
