“Are you going to the fight this weekend? I know Trisha will be there, and I won’t even lie and say I don’t want you to be there.” Dylan’s words make my heart stop and my palms start to sweat. Say no, Raven! You can’t be close to him like this!

“Yeah, I’ll be there.” What? That’s the opposite of no, Raven!

Dylan’s smile is so bright it rivals every star I’ve ever seen. I can’t look away. It’s not one thing in particular about him that pulls me in, it’s everything. How could anyone not want to be close to him? How could I not want to be close to him?

“I’m still not sleeping with you.” I say it just as the door swings open, and an extremely disheveled Trisha and Ethan stumble in. I look at them briefly before I shift my gaze back to Dylan.

His expression is amused as he brings a hand up to run soft fingers over the skin of my cheek. I tense from head-to-toe, but if he notices he doesn’t say anything about it.

“I still haven’t asked.” His words are only loud enough for me to hear, but when I look back at Trisha she is smiling like a kid in a candy store, and I know it’s because of our close proximity.

“Let’s go, man, we have things to take care of.” Ethan’s words seem to snap Dylan out of whatever trance he had been in.

He stands, and my eyes follow his movements until my head is tipping back just to see his face towering above me.

“See you ladies this weekend.” He winks at me, gives a slight wave to Trisha, and then follows Ethan out of the room.

Kline is a stay-at-home wife, and mother of three. She was born and raised in small town Indiana. She spent three years working at a state psychiatric facility, was married at eighteen, and is now accomplishing her life-time dream of becoming a writer.

EXCERPTS

There are a few tables with chairs and only five avatars in the room. One is a blonde lady calling herself BluesGirl88, who walks up to me, looking immaculate in a little black dress just covering her upper thighs. For the first time, I hear an avatar talk through the speakers of my PC, “Hello, mister. Welcome to my club.” Her voice is husky and I find myself wanting to hear more.

I don’t have a microphone to use with the computer, so I continue typing, “Whoever you have playing in this club, I hope they have a CD I can buy.”

She laughs. “CD? Who buys those things anymore? But, yes, you can buy their music online. Are you having a drink?”

I assume she prefers just to talk out loud than type, and it is quicker. “I’ve just finished my third glass of red. I think that’ll do me for tonight.”

“Go on, have another drink. I’m a scotch girl myself.”

I look at our liquor cabinet on the wall. Several bottles of various brands of single malt scotch stand neatly in a line. What the hell, I think to myself and grab one I haven’t had a drink of since New Year’s Eve. I have a tumbler in the top drawer of my desk which I pull out and fill to just under halfway with the thirty-year-old fluid. I go back to typing to the blonde lady, “You evil woman, you got me drinking at eleven p.m. on a work night.”

“You only live once, and one must experience as many of life’s wonders in the short time we get.”

Is she flirting with me?

I joined every sports team I could to keep myself busy so I wouldn’t have to go home to my mom. I eventually had to get a part-time job at an auto shop to help pay for my food. My mother never seemed to care if I had food on the table. The only thing she cared about was how she was going to get her next fix I had no choice but to provide for myself or I would go hungry. Still, I never resented her. Her addiction made me stronger and taught me that hard work pays off. Fast forward and here I am, thirty years old and a DEA Agent with a nice record of busts under my belt. Ironic isn’t it? I grew up with a drug addict and now I take down drug dealers. Dante Santoro, the biggest walking contradiction to the drug world. Nice to meet you.

We are interrupted by the noise of our dinner plates placed on the table. The food smells delicious. His words have distracted me a bit from my original plan.
